Warren (Lefty) Burton Stromberg passed away peacefully at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville surrounded by his family. Warren was born on March 18, 1924 in Tyler, Minnesota to David and Lura (Whitman) Stromberg and was baptized into the Christian Church. He moved from New Rockford to Hope, ND in 1938. Warren graduated from high school in 1942 as salutatorian of his class. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and was stationed in England with the 8th Air Force. He flew 35 missions over Germany in a B-17. He was honorably discharged in 1945. On June 8, 1950, Warren was united in marriage to Eleanor M. Close at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hope. They had three children: Susan, Mark (deceased), and Amy (deceased). He was manager of the Crane-Johnson Lumber Company in Hope for 43 years, retiring in 1986. Warren loved to spend time with his family. Most of all, he enjoyed being entertained by his six great-grandchildren. His favorite pastimes were playing golf, bowling, amateur baseball, cards, dancing, and going on short trips! In his later years, he loved to read, watch sports and old westerns on television. Warren was one of the original committee members in the planning of the Hope Golf Course. He was a member of the Hope American Legion for 73 years, Hope Community Club and Hope Fire Department. Warren was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hope. He was very proud to tell everyone he met that he was from the town of Hope. Warren is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eleanor, and daughter Susan (Clark) Lemley of Hope. Grandchildren: Laura (Josh) Ihry, Hope, ND; Lindsay Vettleson (Levi Holter), West Fargo, ND, and Lacey (Brent) Rust, Harwood, ND. Great-grandchildren: Grant and Claire Ihry, Kaiza Vettleson and Briar Holter, and Josie and Wyatt Rust. 2 sisters: Alta Wenaas, Jamestown, ND; and Kitty Stromberg of Fenton, MI. Sister-in-laws: Betty Stromberg, Wahpeton, ND, and Doris Stromberg of Thief River Falls, MN. Brother-in-law: Arlynn (Cindy) Close of Omaha, NE and many nieces and nephews. Warren was preceded in death by his parents, son-Mark, daughter-Amy, brothers: LeRoy, Reid, Morris, Lewis and sisters: Ione, Myrtle, and Betty Jean. The family would like to thank the staff at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND for the excellent care given to “Lefty”, and also to Hospice of the Red River Valley. Funeral services will be, Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Hope, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday, August, 21, 2018 one hour before services in the Church.
