VERONA L. SEMRAD Verona (Engel) Semrad passed away peacefully in her sleep after a long illness on January 18, 2015 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND. Verona was born November 22, 1934 to Albert and Verna (Burke) Engel in Hillsboro, ND. Following graduation from Hillsboro High School, Verona attended Mayville State College graduating with a degree in teaching. While teaching in Hope, ND she met the love of her life and married Victor Semrad on August 21, 1956. They made their home in the Hope area where Verona taught school for over 40 years. Vic and Verona also owned and operated the RoadRunner Drive-In in Hope for 25 years. Verona’s favorite hobby was gardening. Before moving into an apartment in Hope she had four flower beds and one rock garden. She could be seen out working in her gardens every day making sure that not one weed dare invade her beautiful flowers. The more colorful the better was her motto. “Mrs. Christmas” was what people would call Verona. She loved Christmas and her house would be decorated inside and out from the day after Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day. She always said if she could she would of bought everyone she knew a Christmas present. Verona’s greatest pride and joy were her grandkids. Once the grandkids started coming her husband and 3 daughters were removed from the #1 spot and the grandkids took over. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for them and if they got into trouble she always said it had to be someone else’s fault because her grandkids wouldn’t do that. Throughout the years Verona was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Whist Club, Birthday Club, Red Hat Society and 4-H. Verona is survived by her husband, Vic of Hope, daughters: Debra (Randy) Kyllo of Clifford, Jayne Semrad of Hope, Jennifer (Jeff) Simon of Minot, grandchildren: Shane (DeAnna) Kyllo of Mayville, Chad (Kelsey) Kyllo of Mayville, Blake (fiancé Michelle Landeis) Kyllo of Clifford, Stephanie (Todd) Krout of Denbigh and Rachel Simon of Minot, great-grandchildren: Jordan, Jax, Gavin and Garrett and great foster grandchildren Dylan and Jacob, one very special sister-in-law: Charlotte Engel of Hillsboro, siblings: Larry (Naomi) Engel of Little Falls, Marion (Robert) Lechner of Moorhead, and Dale (Melva) Engel of Las Vegas: several nieces and nephews and the children and their families of her step-father Orville Wiger. Verona was preceded in death by her parents Albert & Verna, her step-father Orville, a brother Ralph and a special niece Stacy Engel. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 3:00 pm in the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hope, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday January 20, 2015 from 5:00 till 7:00 in the Church and one hour before services in the Church. A Prayer Service will be Tuesday at 7:00 in the Church. Interment will be in the Hope Cemetery, Hope, ND. In lieu of flowers memorials to Hospice of The Red River Valley, Redeemer Lutheran Church and Luther Memorial Home would be greatly appreciated.
