VIRGINIA “MAE” MONSON Virginia Mae (Haugen) Monson was born on Christmas Day, 1923, to Bertin and Valborg Haugen. She was the youngest of four siblings including two brothers and one sister. She grew up and attended grade school in Dazey, ND and graduated HS in 1941 from Hannaford HS. In 1942, while still single, she worked for the “CCC” in Cooperstown where she met her future husband, K.A. (Little Kenny) Monson. They were married in August of 1944 and celebrated 67 years together. Two children were born to this union, a son Roger in 1946 and a daughter Leona in 1948. Kenny and Mae purchased a farm in Washburn Township, Griggs County, in 1945 where Mae spent the next 35 years working side by side with Kenny in their farming operation. Following these years, They enjoyed their retirement traveling and sharing hobbies. Shortly after Kenny’s death in 2011, Mae became a full-time resident of the Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown. After 8 years of loving care by the nursing home staff, she passed away there living to the age of almost 96 years. Mae volunteered in many capacities in her lifetime. She was the church organist for the Sheyenne Valley Lutheran Church, rural Finley, for over three decades where she also taught Sunday School and was active in her circle and Ladies Aid groups. She belonged to a homemakers club for 45 years, was a 4-H leader, a member of the American Legion Auxilliary and served on the Griggs Co. Museum board of directors. She and Kenny loved to square dance and play pinochle with friends. She enjoyed doing all sorts of handwork, including Hardanger, and was an excellent seamstress. Mae was preceded in death by her parents, husband K.A. (Little Kenny) Monson, sister, Ida (Norwin) Hanson, brothers Joseph (Betty) Haugen and Harold (Pauline) Haugen. She is survived by her son, Roger (Kathy) Monson, Fargo, ND and Leona Monson, Bakersfield, CA; by two grandchildren, Ryan (Kristi) Monson, The Woodlands, TX and Stephanie (Brent) Kaiser, Grand Forks, ND and six great grandchildren, Brady and Abby Monson, and Jadyn, Nicholas, Max and Magnus Kaiser.
