Evelyn Marie Lentsch Evelyn, our mother, was born April 22, 1922, to Elmer and Myrtle (Schmidt) Hogie in Ball Hill Township in Griggs County, North Dakota. She grew up and attended school in Cooperstown, ND. From age 14-19, Evelyn cleaned homes, ironed clothes and linens, and cared for a child with Cerebral Palsy. She moved to St. Paul, MN, at age 20 and began working for Montgomery Wards in retail, becoming a top saleswoman for the store in the Twin Cities. Evelyn met Michael Lentsch in St. Paul where they later married October 3, 1942, at Fort Snelling. Mom travelled and lived at Army bases in Minnesota, Ohio, Georgia, and North and South Carolinas. After the end of WWII, Mom and Dad moved back to Cooperstown and raised four children. Mom continued her work in retail sales for the Johnson Store and Rex-All Drug & Department Store until the store closed. She then worked 17 years as a nursing home aid. Evelyn and Michael moved to Fargo, ND, in December 1999. Due to health complications, Evelyn moved into Bethany on 42nd in Fargo, ND in March 2014. She died there on June 6, 2019. Evelyn is survived by daughters, Mary Whalen, Roswell, NM; Barbara (Patrick) Mahar, Cavalier, ND; son, James Lentsch (Mary Larson), Valley City, ND; Joan (Patrick) Connor, West Fargo, ND; six grandchildren – Bill Mahar (Tim Williams), Denver, CO; Scott Mahar, Cavalier, ND; David (Molly) Mahar, Scottsdale, AZ; Elizabeth (Ian) Dobson, Lino Lakes, MN; Joseph Connor, Portland, OR; Shelby (Scott) Fisher, St. Anthony, ND; five great-grandchildren – Carys and Declan Dobson, Ava Fisher, Mya and Luke Mahar; sister-in-law Leona Lentsch, St. Cloud, MN, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Michael, parents Elmer and Myrtle, two brothers Marvin and her twin Everett Hogie, sister-in-law Catharine Linn, brothers-in-law Jerome and Elmer Lentsch, son-in-law Patrick Whalen, and niece Rose Marie Linn. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memorial to St. George’s Catholic Church in Cooperstown, ND. A Rosary will be Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 10:00 am in St. George Catholic Church followed by a visitation with a funeral service at 11:00 am all in the church.
