Phyllis and family, I am so sorry that I was unable to make it to the funeral. Cameron picked me up early and said I better just go home and go to bed...I hate pneumonia. My heartfelt sympathies for a might fine man! In many ways Merril was more of a father to me than my own. I learned so much from him about the world over the nearly 20 years I've known him. God has another special angel beside him...in good company!

Though we only knew Merril for a short period of time, it was clear that we was a gentle loving man that will be missed by a family that loved him very much. May God bless his memory! And may God comfort those who mourn!

Dr. Berg was one of the smartest person I have ever met. He was also the kindest. He gave me my first opportunity by recommending that I be hired as Little Hoop's academic dean. Thus begin a life long mentor-ship and friendship. I had a huge amount of respect for Dr. Berg. I knew I could always depend on him to come up a the right solution. I am proud to say I was part of his successes at Little Hoop. Two successful accreditation visits, million of dollars in grant funding and bringing creditability to Little Hoop's academic's programs. When I became president he was right there to help with the transition. Finally, he was always there to help and offer his support the times I experience tragedy in my life. My thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Berg as you begin you journey to the Spirit World. May Wakan Tonka (Great Spirit) welcome you home and reward you for all your kind work here in this world. You will not be forgotten. http://www.meaningfulfunerals.net/images/icons/cross4.gif

Dr. Berg was a noticeable individual during the time he was at Little Hoop Community College. I had the opportunity to work with him on a number of economic development projects for the business of Spirit Lake Tribe. Because of the contributions he made to the community of Ft. Totten, he will be missed. Jerry Cavanaugh

On behalf of the Cankdeska Cikana (Little Hoop)Community College Board of Regents, faculty, students, and the community of the Spirit Dakota Dakota reservation, we extend our condolences to the family. Dr Berg exhibited many characteristics of a Dakota warrior/leader as well as living the values of courage, generosity, respect, and wisdom. We are in a better place today because of Dr Berg's diligent work for our tribal college and our people. We wish him peace and joy.

I had the privledge of working with Mr. Berg as the Secretary at LRJC back in 1966-1968. Mr. Berg was one of the most remarkable people I met in my lifetime. My fondest memory of those working days was typing up a grant in the attic of the Old Weather Bureau on a manual typewriter after a thunderstorm knocked out the electricity. About 6 weeks later, Mr. Berg came to me with a $22,000 grant check. He truly beleived in education and did so many for so many students. My deepest sympathy to his family.

My aquaintance with Merrill spans his entire time at Lake Region, as I started teaching at the Junior College a year prior to his arrival on campus (i.e Pershing Building) and has continued off and on since his retirement. Reading his obituary caused me to recall his contribution to the growth and survival of the College through some difficult times. It prompted me to recall a little ditty I first heard around the time of his retirement, with the proper name inserted-- Merrill was a thoughtful boy, so quiet, like a mouse. He built himself an aeroplane Out of the chicken house. Then he went to bed and dreamed, oh, how he "looped the loop". And when he got up next morning, he went out and "flew the coop"! Merrill had this vision about (now named) Lake Region State College, he labored to build it, and he mad it "fly"! Thank you.
