LORNA M. AUREN It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Lorna Mae Auren, 89, November 22, 2015 surrounded by family and under the care of hospice at the Griggs County Care Center, Cooperstown, ND. Throughout her journey with cancer, Lorna exhibited courage, strength and faith, an inspiration to all. Lorna was born December 9, 1925 in Leal, ND to Kenneth and Neva (Quick) Hanson. She graduated from Dazey, ND High School in 1943. Lorna was a loyal Dazey Alumni, who attended and spoke at the annual reunions and most recently at her 70th reunion. Lorna’s childhood was spent helping on the family farm: from bucking hay to milking cows to growing the family garden to cooking to watching her three younger siblings. Lorna loved staying in Dazey with her grandparents during the school year and treasured her time with her many aunts and uncles. Lorna married Charles W. Jewett in 1945. Their marriage included a young step-daughter. Lorna and Charles had 5 children while living in Karnak, ND. They moved to Cooperstown shortly before his death in 1953. Lorna was the ultimate single mother: she kept her family intact, provided a solid base and many valuable life lessons for her children. Her independent spirit was evident right to the very end. Lorna married Thorvald Auren in 1957 and they had 2 children. Lorna and Thor lived in Cooperstown while farming in Sutton, ND until his death in 2002. Family was of major importance to Lorna and she was definitely the bond that held the family together. The family resided at the same corner in Cooperstown for 63 years. Lorna was very active in the Cooperstown community and very proud of her small town heritage and North Dakota. Through traditional Norway hospitality, she honored her heritage by way of entertaining with love and ease. Lorna’s table has been graced by hundreds of people over the years where stories, meals, coffee, laughter and good times were shared. She was known to a quarter century of school kids as the lady who served sloppy joes and toastie dogs at the Cooperstown School and Bible Camp. Lorna was a performer in community plays, she presented her final performance at Trinity Lutheran Church bringing to life the Lutheran Lady of the 1930’s. She wore her Grandmother Quick’s 100 year old dress for the role. Lorna was involved in the Arts Council, Trinity Lutheran Church, garden club and TOPS. She volunteered at the local thrift store and ND election board. Lorna loved the color red, whether it was glassware, clothing, home furnishings or flowers. She taught her kids to “collect something.” She enjoyed her travels and her annual visits to the homes of her children and grandchildren. Lorna loved to play pinochle, attend garage sales and cheer on the MN Twins. Lorna was an avid book reader and also loved reading the local paper and Fargo Forum and solving the daily word puzzles. She attended to her flower and vegetable gardens; she harvested, cooked, canned, froze and pickled the produce she grew. Lorna was dedicated to walking laps and participating in exercise classes at the fitness center well into her eighties. She was a good historian; people sought her out for missing information. Lorna was so well known; you only needed to say her first name. Did we mention she loved Christmas? She celebrated the spirit of Christmas year round with family and friends. Lorna brought people together and created traditions that will live on through her family. Lorna’s loving spirit, her generous heart, her positive outlook on life and devotion to family will be missed. Lorna was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands and a grandson. She is survived by Faye (Ed) Hasche, Bismarck, ND, Charles (Deborah) Jewett, Bradenton, FL, George (Janell) Jewett, Rapid City, SD, Karen (Dave) Warnica, Spokane, WA, Roland (Linda) Jewett, Cooperstown, ND, Nancy (Bob) Everson, Courtenay, ND, Robert Auren, Apple Valley, MN, Lori (Craig) Hanson, Menomonie, WI, her sisters, Marilyn Clark, Cooperstown, ND, Queva Morrow, Fargo, ND and a brother KC Hanson, Hannaford, ND. Lorna has left a wonderful legacy to 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 10:30 am in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cooperstown, ND. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 till 7:00 in the Church and one hour before services in the Church. A Prayer Service will be Friday at 7:00 in the Church.
